Cognitive impairment in the Aging Adult

Some long-term care facilities have special units for residents with dementias, whereas others mix these residents with residents who have normal cognitive function.
Discuss the pros and cons of these approaches.
a. The wife of a man with AD confides in you that she feels guilty because she promised her husband that she would never put him in a nursing home, but she is now considering it. She says that she is feeling exhausted and gets so overwhelmed with the situation that she has slapped her husband several times when he has resisted care. Discuss your response to her and the options you could recommend.
b. Review the causes of some dementias and describe lifestyle changes people can make early in life to decrease their risk for developing these dementias.
