How does a nurse know what (if any) knowledge in a research study is usable for clinical practice? What would a critical thinker look for in the evidence before deciding to change? What influence do credibility and clinical significance have on your decisions to integrate research-based evidence into your practice? Our weekly objectives include:

Appraise findings from quantitative and qualitative research.

Differentiate between the Components Discussion and Conclusion sections of the research report.

here is a sample paper from one of my classmates as a guide: As a nurse, it is beneficial to incorporate evidence-based practice when creating a treatment plan and caring for the patient. In regards to our PICOT question, we looked at the research relevant to patient education and improved satisfaction of patients. However, many studies within this topic were aimed at looking at patient outcomes when using a specific type of method for educating patients, the teach-back method. As I read the research, I now look at the type of sample, the sample sizes, and the type of intervention. I look at the quantitative or qualitative data. Lastly, I look at the results through statistics of the data. According to Schub & Engelke (2018), the teach-back method is a one-on-one method that actively engages a patient. When describing the different methods and looking at the results, the teach-back method has been proven to increase medication compliance and proper use. Specifically, it also has increased patient outcomes in COPD and heart failure patients (Schub & Engelke, 2018). These are the components I look for in a study, along with statistics.

According to this weeks lesson, credibility and confidence are maintained by a study when the sampling strategy is strong and the subjects reflect the intended population (Chamberlain College, 2019). These components make the evidence relevant in our practice.
